COVID-19 Emergency Tenant Protections & Rent Strikes Map

Covid 19 is impacting every aspect of our lives, and working class people around the country are our of work or losing wages due to illness, caring for children at home due to school closures, or as a result of shelter-in-place orders. Lots of people are broke, and finding themselves worried about whether or not they will be able to stay in their homes with no income. This is exacerbating an already extreme housing crisis experienced in the United States, and around the world. We don’t know how long this economic crisis will go on, but we do know that people need to have their right to housing protected.

Produced by the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project (AEMP) in partnership with Mapping Action Collective (MAC), COVID-19 Emergency Tenant Protections & Rent Strikes maps tenant protections and rent strikes in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Based upon crowdsourced data as well as ongoing research by members of MAC, the AEMP, and partner organizations, this map visualizes ongoing housing justice work globally.

Viewers can use one of two forms to either add information about a tenant protection in their respective city, county, or state, or about a rent strike that they are a part of. While the AEMP maintains close relationships with a number of tenant organizations and networks, this development of this map has in particular relied upon collaboration with the California-statewide organization, Tenants Together, the San Francisco Anti-Displacement Coalition, and Bay Area Rent Strike (BARS) organizers. We are open to working with other community partners in other cities going forward! Our global version is currently being orchestrated with research collaboration and translation support from our friends at kollektiv orangotango and beyond.

Please share this map with your networks, and encourage folks to contribute any rent strikes or emergency protections as they develop.
